The Health Promotion Board (HPB) is encouraging Singaporeans to switch from regular salt to lower-sodium salt alternatives as part of efforts to reduce sodium intake and support better heart health.

Singapore residents consume an average of 3,600mg of sodium per day, nearly double the World Health Organization’s recommended limit of less than 2,000mg. Around 75% of Singapore’s sodium intake comes from added salt, sauces and seasonings, making the choice of salt an important part of reducing sodium consumption.

Lower-sodium salt alternatives can replace part of the sodium chloride with potassium, providing around 30% less sodium than regular salt while helping to increase potassium intake.

HPB also highlighted that switching to lower-sodium salt does not have to compromise taste. Trials with food caterers found that most participants felt the food tasted the same after switching, while the additional cost was minimal.

To support the nationwide reduction of sodium intake, HPB has been working with salt suppliers, food manufacturers, caterers and retailers to increase the availability and adoption of lower-sodium salt, sauces and seasonings.

The initiative highlights how lower-sodium salt alternatives can provide a practical way to reduce sodium intake while maintaining the taste of everyday meals.
